Laikipia

Laikipia County

Laikipia, located in central Kenya, is a sprawling wilderness that spans over 9,500 square kilometers (3,670 square miles) of diverse landscapes, from rolling savannahs and dense forests to rocky outcrops and riverine ecosystems. This region, nestled between the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Great Rift Valley, is a premier destination for those seeking an authentic and exclusive safari experience.

Laikipia is renowned for its private conservancies, each offering unique wildlife encounters and conservation initiatives. Among the most notable is Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a pioneering conservancy dedicated to the protection of endangered species such as black and white rhinos and Grevy’s zebras. Lewa’s innovative approach to conservation includes community involvement and sustainable tourism, ensuring the preservation of its rich biodiversity.

Borana Conservancy, adjacent to Lewa, is another jewel in Laikipia’s crown. This family-owned conservancy combines luxury tourism with conservation, providing habitats for a variety of wildlife including lions, elephants, and rhinos. The conservancy’s commitment to sustainable practices makes it a model for wildlife protection and community engagement.

Suiyan Conservancy, a hidden gem in northern Laikipia, offers a more remote and intimate safari experience. Known for its rugged beauty and unspoiled landscapes, Suiyan is ideal for those seeking solitude and a deep connection with nature. The conservancy supports healthy populations of elephants, giraffes, and a multitude of bird species.

Segera Retreat, part of the Zeitz Foundation, is a luxurious safari lodge set within the Segera Conservancy. This retreat emphasizes holistic experiences, blending wildlife conservation with wellness and cultural immersion. Visitors to Segera can enjoy game drives, guided walks, and community visits, all while staying in eco-friendly accommodations.

Other notable conservancies in Laikipia include Ol Jogi, known for its extensive wildlife and luxury accommodations, and Ol Pejeta Conservancy, famed for its rhino sanctuary and commitment to wildlife conservation. These conservancies collectively contribute to making Laikipia a stronghold for some of Kenya’s most iconic species and a leader in sustainable tourism practices.

Laikipia’s unique approach to conservation involves collaboration with local communities, ensuring that wildlife protection goes hand in hand with the well-being of the people who live in the region. This model has been highly successful, creating a harmonious balance between tourism, conservation, and community development.

Visitors to Laikipia can enjoy a range of activities, from traditional game drives and guided bush walks to horse riding safaris and cultural visits. The region’s stunning landscapes, abundant wildlife, and exclusive lodges provide a safari experience that is both luxurious and deeply connected to nature.

Laikipia stands out as a premier destination for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, where conservation efforts and luxury experiences converge in one of Kenya’s most beautiful and biodiverse regions.

Our Travelers Testimonials

The Best in East Africa

We were a group of about 25 people. This was a bucket list trip for us (husband and myself) and Travel Wild did not disappoint. Fabulous from the minute we landed. Everything was perfect. Excellent communication, timing, helpfulness. Beautiful accommodations, friendly helpful people. We stayed busy, but were also offered down time. Travel Wild was patient with my many many email questions and provided prompt replies. It would be a dream to book with them again.

Totally Recommend Travel Wild!

We had travelled with a group of 40 with Travel Wild. Dan was our guide for the 5 day trip which was starting from the Nairobi Airport-Naivasha-Masai Mara Safari and back to Airport. The stay were perfect and Travel Wild was on standby for any/all requirements that we have. We would 100% recommend them and especially travel with Dan as there is never a dull moment while travelling with him.

A Massive Thank-You From A Return Customer!

Having used Travel Wild a few years ago, I was longing to come back to East Africa to explore the region a bit further. One cannot imagine a trip to Kenya or Tanzania without going on safari, however I was wary of taking young children (5 & 7 years old) on such a tour. Travel Wild carefully planned our itinerary taking into account our wishes and specifics of the group which did take some time, therefore thanks a lot for your patience!

Incredible Trip To Kilimanjaro & Mt. Kenya!

My friends and I joined Travel Wild Tours on an 8 day trip to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and a 5 day trip to Mt Kenya National Park in Kenya. Although the company is based in Kenya, they subcontracted another professional company called Enjoy Kili to lead us on the Kilimanjaro trek in Tanzania. It was a well put together trip with great service. I definitely recommend this company and their Mt Kenya trip!

Amazing, Memorable Tailor-Made Safari Holiday!

Travel Wild (based in Nairobi, Kenya) organised a fully bespoke holiday from us (we are based in London, England) incorporating 5 different destinations across Kenya and full action packed itineraries at each destination, including transport between the locations, guides, domestic flights, and sound advice throughout. We felt thoroughly catered for and in safe hands. The team is always on email and on the phone and we had no qualms. Would recommend using Travel Wild directly from abroad. A holiday of a life time that we won't forget. Thank you to the team.
