Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha, located in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, is a freshwater lake renowned for its scenic beauty and abundant wildlife. Covering approximately 139 square kilometers (54 square miles), the lake is surrounded by lush greenery and is a vital part of the larger Naivasha ecosystem. Its proximity to Nairobi, just a short drive away, makes it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

One of the key attractions of Lake Naivasha is its rich birdlife. Over 400 species of birds can be found here, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise. Among the avian residents are African fish eagles, cormorants, pelicans, kingfishers, and herons. The sight of fish eagles swooping down to catch fish from the lake’s surface is a particularly captivating experience.

Lake Naivasha is also home to a sizable population of hippos, which can often be seen lounging in the water or grazing along the shores. These majestic creatures add to the lake’s charm, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife photography. In addition to hippos, the surrounding areas host other wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, waterbucks, and various antelope species.

One of the unique features of Lake Naivasha is Crescent Island, a private sanctuary located on the eastern side of the lake. Accessible by boat, Crescent Island offers guided walking tours where visitors can explore the island on foot, getting up close to animals in a predator-free environment. The island’s landscapes, dotted with acacia trees and open grasslands, provide a peaceful and picturesque setting for wildlife encounters.

Adjacent to the lake is Hell’s Gate National Park, known for its dramatic scenery, including towering cliffs, geothermal hot springs, and deep gorges. The park is named after a narrow break in the cliffs and offers activities such as hiking, rock climbing, and cycling, making it a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including buffalos, zebras, and warthogs, as well as the rare lammergeyer vultures.

The area around Lake Naivasha is rich in horticulture, with numerous flower farms that export blooms worldwide. These farms, along with the lake’s freshwater resources, play a significant role in the local economy. Visitors can tour some of these farms to learn about the flower-growing process and see the vibrant fields in bloom.

Accommodations around Lake Naivasha range from luxury lodges and tented camps to budget-friendly options, catering to diverse preferences and budgets. Many of these lodges offer boat rides on the lake, allowing visitors to enjoy close-up views of hippos, birds, and the serene waters.

Conservation efforts are an important aspect of Lake Naivasha’s management, with initiatives focused on maintaining the health of the lake and its surrounding ecosystem. These efforts include sustainable fishing practices, pollution control, and habitat preservation, ensuring that Lake Naivasha remains a thriving natural habitat.

Whether you’re taking a leisurely boat ride, exploring the wildlife on Crescent Island, or hiking through Hell’s Gate National Park, Lake Naivasha offers a tranquil and immersive experience. Its blend of scenic beauty, diverse wildlife, and rich birdlife make it a standout destination in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley.

In summary, Lake Naivasha is a captivating destination that combines natural splendor with abundant wildlife and rich birdlife. Its easy accessibility, range of activities, and conservation focus make it an ideal spot for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and adventure seekers alike. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or adventure, Lake Naivasha promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley.

Our Travelers Testimonials

The Best in East Africa

We were a group of about 25 people. This was a bucket list trip for us (husband and myself) and Travel Wild did not disappoint. Fabulous from the minute we landed. Everything was perfect. Excellent communication, timing, helpfulness. Beautiful accommodations, friendly helpful people. We stayed busy, but were also offered down time. Travel Wild was patient with my many many email questions and provided prompt replies. It would be a dream to book with them again.

A Massive Thank-You From A Return Customer!

Having used Travel Wild a few years ago, I was longing to come back to East Africa to explore the region a bit further. One cannot imagine a trip to Kenya or Tanzania without going on safari, however I was wary of taking young children (5 & 7 years old) on such a tour. Travel Wild carefully planned our itinerary taking into account our wishes and specifics of the group which did take some time, therefore thanks a lot for your patience!

Incredible Trip To Kilimanjaro & Mt. Kenya!

My friends and I joined Travel Wild Tours on an 8 day trip to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and a 5 day trip to Mt Kenya National Park in Kenya. Although the company is based in Kenya, they subcontracted another professional company called Enjoy Kili to lead us on the Kilimanjaro trek in Tanzania. It was a well put together trip with great service. I definitely recommend this company and their Mt Kenya trip!

Amazing, Memorable Tailor-Made Safari Holiday!

Travel Wild (based in Nairobi, Kenya) organised a fully bespoke holiday from us (we are based in London, England) incorporating 5 different destinations across Kenya and full action packed itineraries at each destination, including transport between the locations, guides, domestic flights, and sound advice throughout. We felt thoroughly catered for and in safe hands. The team is always on email and on the phone and we had no qualms. Would recommend using Travel Wild directly from abroad. A holiday of a life time that we won't forget. Thank you to the team.
