Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Ol Pejeta Conservancy, located in the Laikipia region of central Kenya, is a pioneering wildlife conservancy and one of East Africa’s most important conservation success stories. Covering approximately 360 square kilometers (140 square miles), Ol Pejeta is renowned for its commitment to conservation, its diverse wildlife, and its efforts to protect endangered species.

One of Ol Pejeta’s most notable achievements is its role as the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. The conservancy is home to over 140 black rhinos, a testament to its effective anti-poaching measures and dedicated conservation efforts. Additionally, Ol Pejeta is the only place in Kenya where visitors can see chimpanzees, thanks to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. This sanctuary, established in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, provides a haven for chimpanzees rescued from the black market and other distressing situations.

Ol Pejeta also houses the last two remaining northern white rhinos in the world, a poignant reminder of the critical need for conservation. These rhinos are under constant protection, and visitors can learn about the global efforts to save this subspecies from extinction.

The conservancy is home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—as well as a multitude of other species, including cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and hippos. The diverse habitats within Ol Pejeta, ranging from savannah and grasslands to riverine forests, support this rich array of wildlife, making it an exceptional safari destination.

Visitors to Ol Pejeta can engage in various activities that enhance their understanding and appreciation of conservation. Game drives, both day and night, offer the chance to see wildlife in their natural habitats, while guided bush walks provide a more intimate experience of the landscape. The conservancy also offers lion tracking experiences, where guests can learn about the behavior and ecology of these majestic predators.

In addition to traditional safari activities, Ol Pejeta offers unique experiences such as visits to the rhino sanctuary, where guests can meet and learn about the endangered rhinos up close. The conservancy’s Endangered Species Enclosure is another highlight, providing insights into the efforts to save critically endangered animals.

Community involvement is a cornerstone of Ol Pejeta’s conservation model. The conservancy works closely with local communities to promote sustainable livelihoods, education, and healthcare. These initiatives not only benefit the people living around Ol Pejeta but also foster a sense of shared responsibility for wildlife conservation.

Accommodation options within Ol Pejeta cater to a range of preferences and budgets. From luxury lodges and tented camps to more rustic options, guests can enjoy comfortable stays while being immersed in nature. Many lodges offer spectacular views of Mount Kenya, adding to the scenic beauty of the conservancy.

Ol Pejeta’s commitment to conservation extends beyond wildlife. The conservancy engages in various environmental initiatives, including habitat restoration, sustainable agriculture, and water conservation projects. These efforts ensure that the natural resources of the area are preserved for future generations.

Whether you’re tracking rhinos, observing chimpanzees, or participating in community projects, Ol Pejeta Conservancy offers a profound and enriching experience. Its successful blend of conservation, community engagement, and tourism serves as a model for sustainable wildlife management in Africa.

In summary, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a premier destination for conservation-minded travelers. Its dedication to protecting endangered species, its diverse wildlife, and its community-focused initiatives make it a standout location in Kenya. Visiting Ol Pejeta not only provides unforgettable wildlife encounters but also supports vital conservation efforts that have a lasting impact on the region.

Our Travelers Testimonials

The Best in East Africa

We were a group of about 25 people. This was a bucket list trip for us (husband and myself) and Travel Wild did not disappoint. Fabulous from the minute we landed. Everything was perfect. Excellent communication, timing, helpfulness. Beautiful accommodations, friendly helpful people. We stayed busy, but were also offered down time. Travel Wild was patient with my many many email questions and provided prompt replies. It would be a dream to book with them again.

Totally Recommend Travel Wild!

We had travelled with a group of 40 with Travel Wild. Dan was our guide for the 5 day trip which was starting from the Nairobi Airport-Naivasha-Masai Mara Safari and back to Airport. The stay were perfect and Travel Wild was on standby for any/all requirements that we have. We would 100% recommend them and especially travel with Dan as there is never a dull moment while travelling with him.

A Massive Thank-You From A Return Customer!

Having used Travel Wild a few years ago, I was longing to come back to East Africa to explore the region a bit further. One cannot imagine a trip to Kenya or Tanzania without going on safari, however I was wary of taking young children (5 & 7 years old) on such a tour. Travel Wild carefully planned our itinerary taking into account our wishes and specifics of the group which did take some time, therefore thanks a lot for your patience!

Incredible Trip To Kilimanjaro & Mt. Kenya!

My friends and I joined Travel Wild Tours on an 8 day trip to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and a 5 day trip to Mt Kenya National Park in Kenya. Although the company is based in Kenya, they subcontracted another professional company called Enjoy Kili to lead us on the Kilimanjaro trek in Tanzania. It was a well put together trip with great service. I definitely recommend this company and their Mt Kenya trip!

Amazing, Memorable Tailor-Made Safari Holiday!

Travel Wild (based in Nairobi, Kenya) organised a fully bespoke holiday from us (we are based in London, England) incorporating 5 different destinations across Kenya and full action packed itineraries at each destination, including transport between the locations, guides, domestic flights, and sound advice throughout. We felt thoroughly catered for and in safe hands. The team is always on email and on the phone and we had no qualms. Would recommend using Travel Wild directly from abroad. A holiday of a life time that we won't forget. Thank you to the team.
