Tsavo West National Park

Tsavo West National Park

Tsavo West National Park, located in southeastern Kenya, is a captivating wildlife reserve that spans approximately 9,065 square kilometers (3,502 square miles). Established in 1948 alongside Tsavo East, it forms part of the Tsavo Conservation Area and is renowned for its diverse landscapes, rich wildlife, and unique geological features.

One of Tsavo West’s most distinctive features is its varied topography. The park’s landscape includes rugged volcanic hills, open plains, and lush riverine forests. This diversity creates a range of habitats that support an impressive array of wildlife and provide spectacular scenery. The park’s diverse ecosystems range from arid plains and acacia woodlands to dense bush and rocky outcrops.

Tsavo West is famous for its impressive wildlife, including large populations of elephants, lions, leopards, and buffaloes. The park is known for its black-maned lions, which are often seen roaming the plains or resting in the shade. The elephants in Tsavo West are notable for their impressive tusks and large size, and visitors can witness their dramatic interactions as they feed and bathe in the park’s water sources.

The park is also home to several unique geological features, including the Chyulu Hills, a range of volcanic mountains that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The Chyulu Hills are one of the youngest volcanic formations in the world and are characterized by their lush vegetation and dense forests. They provide a cool and refreshing contrast to the surrounding arid plains and are a great spot for hiking and exploring.

Another notable feature of Tsavo West is the Mzima Springs, a series of natural springs that provide a vital water source for the park’s wildlife. The springs feed into crystal-clear pools and streams that attract a variety of animals, including hippos, crocodiles, and a range of bird species. A unique highlight is the underwater viewing chamber at the springs, where visitors can observe hippos and fish swimming below the surface.

The park’s lava flows, such as the Shetani Lava Flow, are a striking feature of Tsavo West. These blackened, rugged lava fields are remnants of ancient volcanic activity and add to the park’s dramatic and varied landscape. The Shetani Lava Flow is one of the largest and most impressive lava formations in Kenya and provides a stark contrast to the park’s green areas.

Birdwatchers will find Tsavo West rewarding, with over 400 bird species recorded in the park. Notable species include the endangered Somali ostrich, the vulturine guineafowl, and a variety of raptors and waterfowl. The park’s diverse habitats support a wide range of avian life, making it an excellent destination for birdwatching enthusiasts.

Accommodation options in Tsavo West cater to a range of preferences, from luxury lodges and tented camps to more budget-friendly choices. Many lodges offer guided game drives, walking safaris, and visits to key attractions like Mzima Springs, ensuring a comprehensive and immersive safari experience.

Conservation efforts in Tsavo West focus on preserving the park’s diverse ecosystems and protecting its wildlife. These initiatives include anti-poaching measures, habitat management, and community outreach programs aimed at promoting sustainable coexistence between wildlife and local communities.

In addition to wildlife viewing, Tsavo West offers opportunities for cultural engagement with local communities. Visitors can learn about the traditions and lifestyles of the indigenous tribes living around the park and gain insights into their relationship with the land and wildlife.

In summary, Tsavo West National Park provides a rich and varied safari experience with its diverse landscapes, unique geological features, and abundant wildlife. The park’s black-maned lions, impressive volcanic formations, and crystal-clear springs make it a standout destination in Kenya. Whether exploring the rugged hills, observing wildlife around Mzima Springs, or taking in the panoramic views from the Chyulu Hills, Tsavo West promises an unforgettable adventure in one of Kenya’s most scenic and diverse national parks.

Our Travelers Testimonials

The Best in East Africa

We were a group of about 25 people. This was a bucket list trip for us (husband and myself) and Travel Wild did not disappoint. Fabulous from the minute we landed. Everything was perfect. Excellent communication, timing, helpfulness. Beautiful accommodations, friendly helpful people. We stayed busy, but were also offered down time. Travel Wild was patient with my many many email questions and provided prompt replies. It would be a dream to book with them again.

The stay were perfect and Travel Wild was on standby for any/all requirements that we have. We would 100% recommend them and especially travel with Dan as there is never a dull moment while travelling with him.

A Massive Thank-You From A Return Customer!

Having used Travel Wild a few years ago, I was longing to come back to East Africa to explore the region a bit further. One cannot imagine a trip to Kenya or Tanzania without going on safari, however I was wary of taking young children (5 & 7 years old) on such a tour. Travel Wild carefully planned our itinerary taking into account our wishes and specifics of the group which did take some time, therefore thanks a lot for your patience!

Incredible Trip To Kilimanjaro & Mt. Kenya!

My friends and I joined Travel Wild Tours on an 8 day trip to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and a 5 day trip to Mt Kenya National Park in Kenya. Although the company is based in Kenya, they subcontracted another professional company called Enjoy Kili to lead us on the Kilimanjaro trek in Tanzania. It was a well put together trip with great service. I definitely recommend this company and their Mt Kenya trip!

Amazing, Memorable Tailor-Made Safari Holiday!

Travel Wild (based in Nairobi, Kenya) organised a fully bespoke holiday from us (we are based in London, England) incorporating 5 different destinations across Kenya and full action packed itineraries at each destination, including transport between the locations, guides, domestic flights, and sound advice throughout. We felt thoroughly catered for and in safe hands. The team is always on email and on the phone and we had no qualms. Would recommend using Travel Wild directly from abroad. A holiday of a life time that we won't forget. Thank you to the team.
